Waste AM

I’ve been to Nepal in 1991 I couldn’t imagine a friendlier and kinder sharing people anywhere on the planet, but it seems in recent years the situation has completely changed, especially in the Kathmandu Valley area, where there’s a great deal of reported crime, mainly by young people. I find it curious that some of the  unsavoury characters in your group that that went on a petty pilfering spree, may have a lot to answer for:  the escalating crime, mainly in the tourist areas, continues to escalate, which is a tragic shame, no doubt our Western way of life, is also contaminating these once beautiful places. Your  graphic descriptions on the pod-cast, of recent years, it seems that it’s turned into a waste dump, and worse, which I find tragic,
 When I was there it was not like that at all, we hired some motorcycles ( Indian Royal Enfield  350 bullets) from Kathmandu to Bombay (which it was called  then) it was a fantastic journey but at the same time we saw some terrible poverty along the way, I find it very disagreeable that Westerners with their perceived wealth, should take it upon themselves to steal off such poor people, and not seem to think any think untoward is happening, and I personally think it’s totally disgusting myself that this sort of thing continues to go on….
By the way I’ve heard in recent years that there is lots of scams going on out there, concerning volunteer labour, how did it go for you on your adventure concerning these sort of things joddle? or didn’t it affect you, or your group…

I can imagine the scams – being an NGO is THE business to be in out there. The people (mostly men) working in it have status and wealth conferred on to them. I hope they don’t get too dependent on this aid it will be better for them.

Our project was run by Christian Aid so for the most part it was fine. They were all obviously trying to delay / stall the completion date though. They would tell us Nepali people don’t use machinery – when you could plainly observe a cement mixer in any local development. Once the delivery truck dumped sand really far away although it could have driven up, and we had to go and get it in wheelbarrows!

You know I always have a different way of looking at things: I wasn’t going there to ‘change the world’ like some of the other volunteers. I went there to experience something new. I got out more than I put it.

Interesting observation about their thieving – shameful behaviour

I think all “non-government organisations” have their own hidden agendas, and funny enough most are funded from governments? anyway, and I don’t see “Christian aid” is any different, spreading in most cases, their unwanted dogmatology  and I suppose the locals may think that you are taking way work, that they could eventually do,
 So most probably are not forthcoming with their enthusiasm to comply! (aggregate lorry driver),

 I think one can always learn new skills and experiences no matter what they are, we always come through them more fulfilled, and wiser people in the end, I’m glad that you felt it a rewarding experience joddle  ….

Christians across the globe seemed to think “environmentalism” is some sort of daemonic cult? according to this American link, they call it the Green Dragon,! and should be resisted And destroyed at any cost! what do you think joddle, considering you went on one of their volunteer outings abroad, to spread the word, do you think it clashes somewhat with your environmentalism?.
